ME: Can you please introduce yourself ?
My name is Clement Igbor, my stage name is Clemency. I'm a 500 level MBBS student. I’m from Delta state.
ME: Have you been involved in school politics? What posts have you held?
I’ve been serving since my first year in this school. I’ve served under several committees. I held the post of the AMSUL PRO in 2016 and I was the General Secretary, AMSUL editorial board in 2015 and a member of the editorial board in 2015. Also been serving on COMPSSA Editorial board since 2014, currently heading the board. I’m always constantly on different committees.
ME: What do you do for fun?
I stroll a lot, especially in the dark. I stroll every nook and cranny of this school. I love playing games . I also love sleeping. For me, sleeping is fun.
ME: Asides from being a student, what do you do? Do you have any side hustles?
I'm a model. I write, I'm into content creation and cinematography. I'm also a poet, I host a poetry show on campus. I'm also an event compere and a voice over artiste.
ME: Do you have any role models here in CMUL?
I don't really have a role model but I admire some people. I admire guys that successful in their field. People like Fola David and Brammy here in Medilag and people like Rudy franscisco, Titilope Shonuga, in the field of poetry. In modeling, Seun Logan, The Toyin, Victor Ndigwe, my bro Fiyin here in Medilag, Baju Wale who used to be here in Medilag and gave me some mentorship when he was around.
ME: So far, what’s your best moment in CMUL?
Well, I've spent 4 years in this school. I feel it's not fair to say I have just one best moment. Anyways, some of my best moments have been checking my results and seeing that I have no re-sits despite not being as serious as I should have been.
Another one of my best times was when I contested in the Mr and Miss Medilag competition In 2015. Although I was 2nd runner-up, it was a wonderful experience. I had really good times with friends. Times when I host my shows are also amazing.
ME: And what’s your worst moment in CMUL?
There have been bad moments too but I don’t think anyone comes to mind. There’s been a lot of bad moments from bad results to incourses but none stands out as the worst.
ME: What are your most outstanding moments as a poet?
Here in this school I have two very memorable performances one of them was way back in 2014 when I was still a new student in this school. There was this open mic poetry event organized by writer’s club.
I performed there and I got a standing ovation here in Medilag. I was still very new to Medilag then, so it was a big deal that people stood up to appreciate me. I still refer to that day whenever I want to do a stuffs here in Medilag.
My performance at Mr. Medilag that was a very big one, that was one of my biggest crowds then. Another one was at the Faculty of basic medical sciences symposium in 2014. The provost, deputy provost, all principal staff officers stood up and were clapping, I was just in part 1 and the reception was really good.
Outside I’ve had a lot of shows… ermmm 2014 National slam was a good experience for me as it was my first time contesting in the slam I finished a runner up, since then I took up a career in poetry.
ME: What are the challenges you’ve faced as a student and as a poet.
At times I wish I was more serious with my studies. Time management is a constant challenge because there were times where I had to shuffle up my calendar as a poet, a student and an Exco at some point. Every time, and in everything I do academically, I always feel that I could have and I can do more. It always bothers me.
Another thing is motivation. It’s easy to become less motivated, we see people who have graduated years ago not doing so well, it’s so discouraging. There is serious lack of motivation. The issue of laziness too and then sometimes the school management can be inconsiderate with the way they set their exams and incourse schedules sometimes.
As a poet, there’s the challenge of publicity and promotion. The industry isn’t well appreciated. People feel poetry is boring and it’s difficult changing the public perception. And it’s not that lucrative.
ME: If there was something you could change or improve on in CMUL, what would it be?
Medilag is a very small place I like to walk a lot, I wish it was bigger and it had a lot of hangouts. Even the few ones we had are either restricted or taken over. Anyways, it’s not a campus so we have to understand that.
I like Medilag. I like the spirit. The students are very encouraging and supportive, we have this close knit relationship amongst ourselves, you can’t find that at Akoka. Medilag is a place where you can get to know almost everybody. I like that.
I feel we can still do a lot for ourselves. Here, I see a lot of talents that are not properly groomed. A lot of untapped student resources.
ME: If you could change something from the past, what would it be?
I think I wouldn’t have taken my break from school politics this year.
Another one is waiting too long to start Diverse because I have a few years to spend here and I’m very worried about the continuity. Probably if I had started earlier, it would have grown to a large community where it can stand on its own.
ME: What has brought you this far? What inspires/motivates you?
I’m hardly inspired at this place but when I need inspiration I look at the fact that am almost done and that I have also inspired others. I have to admit that most of my seniors inspire me.
For my writing I get my inspiration from almost anything thing around, I am a very emotional person, I get inspired by my emotions. I am also inspired to write by situations and things that are not going well in the society. I’m also inspired by people that follow my work.
ME: Do you consider poetry a possible alternative career?
Well, it might end up being a side thing. But if I have the opportunity to pursue it as a career I will but I might do it as a side thing when am working in the medical field…
ME: How do you balance your academic life, official duties and your personal relationships?
I really can't say i've been balancing, i've been juggling it. I don’t know how. It’s by God’s grace. For my school work, I do something very funny.
When push comes to shove, when that time of the year arrives and it dawns on me that if I don’t do something fast, I’m going to fail, I can be very fast at working. I can take out 1or 2 weeks and commit it fully to studying. I drop other things and face it squarely.
ME: What is your view on boyfriend/girlfriend relationships in Medilag?
Well, it’s a personal thing. Most of us here are adults. I’m in my mid-twenties, I feel I’m old enough to be in a serious relationship with someone. In fact, I’m in a serious relationship with someone.
ME: Really? Is she here?
Yes, she’s in Medilag here. A lot of people know her.
ME: What is the one thing you want to be remembered for?
I’m a legacy person. I believe that I have more plaques in my heart than I have on my walls.
There are some things that I’ve done that I know in my heart is good but people may not appreciate.
I may not be singled out for these things but I’ve a part of lots of legacies. I was part of the board that produced the first ever AMSUL digest and a secretary to the board that produce it the second time. I’ve served as an AMSUL exco (Golden jubilee AMSUL tenure).
I still have some time left before I go. So I hope to get more involved in school politics so I can serve more.
And of course, Diverse. The idea behind Diverse is grooming people with talents like poets, musicians- any talent that need nurturing. I want to be remembered for this.
And I still intend to do more. I’d like to be remembered for the creative part of me.
ME: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
I would probably be working in the health sector- Psychiatry or ophthalmology . I’m also looking at doing something about the medical media. There are few medical shows on TV . I might also have my own spoken word show. I'll probably be married.
And on this note did the interview end.
We hope all questions you have about Clemency have been answered here.
