It was a Saturday night, with a full moon and the stars spreading like and ocean over the dark blue sky. I loved watching horror movies outside, on our balcony, nights like this. This particular night included my sister sharing a large praying mat with me, as we enjoyed a movie titled ‘’The day the earth stood still’’ on my laptop.
A comet shot across the sky from our veranda’s view. I still suspect that was what inspired her to ask me the question ‘’ If ALIENS exist, have they been to Nigeria before?’’.
I couldn’t reply her at the time because I had no answer. Which incepted my never ending journey of finding out if they have been here.
To begin, we first have to understand, what are generally termed as ALIENs, UFOs, Extraterrestrials.
Extraterrestrial life (ET was formed from 2 Latin words, Extra meaning BEYOND OR NOT OF; and Terrestris meaning OF OR BELONGING TO EARTH. It is defined as life that does not originate from earth, which is often referred to as Alien. These hypothetical forms of life range from simple bacteria-like organisms to beings far more complex than humans (the latter is what this article is based on).
In modern popular culture the term UFO has generally become synonymous with alien spacecraft. However, the term ETV (Extraterrestrial Vehicle) is sometimes used to separate this explanation of UFOs from totally earthbound explanation.
Although UFO sightings have occurred throughout recorded history, modern interest in them are based from reports from world war 2. Further fueled in the late 1940s by Ronneth Arnold’s report of a close encounter which led to the coining of the term ‘’Flying Saucer’’ and the Roswell incident.
Among the observers of UFOs were reliable sources like fighter pilots, some Navy soldiers and even some genius scientist. Yet 16-20% of UFO sightings have not been explained by science, nor any other fields which you might say proposes to the actual existence of ALIENs.
Hypothetically UFO existence and science fiction has often depicted EXRATERRESTRIAL life with humanoid and or reptilian forms. ALIENs have often been depicted in green or grey color, with a large head, as well as four limbs; i.e. fundamentally humanoid. Other subjects, such as felines, insects, blobs, etc. have occurred in fictional representation of aliens.

Getting back to this article after such a lengthy derailment, I noticed that in both movies and general orientation. Aliens are usually related to other continents and not Africa (except in the movie ‘’DISTRICT 9”) especially not Nigeria.
But logical reasoning, if Aliens are to land anywhere on earth, they would require a discrete location, vast in natural resources (Vegetation, Minerals… etc.), and water. A site mostly void of chemical pollutants, the most suitable location would be a continent filled with 3rd World countries and generally under looked like Africa.
Another need of the ETs would be a good , secure and secretive communication center for which at the time independence, Nigeria used to be.
If they have been here, Nigeria would have been a good spot for them to habituate.
How come there have been no reports of UFO sighting in Nigeria? I asked myself.
Nigeria is a nation embedded with rich history and vast traditions, it is no surprise she is filled with superstitious people.
So I believe Nigerians had already given names in accordance with their understandings to any strange object flying sightings.
For example, Yoruba people have been known to tell different stories of sighting beings, in humanoid form with powers like invisibility (disappearing), telepathy (mind reading; i.e. been able to tell ones past or problem); Telekinesis (ability to control object with the mind), at the forest or in dark. These beings are have been referred to as ‘’Ebora” or “Iwin”, “Egbere” and so on…
Another example is the sighting of dead people living in a different community from where they died (Shape Shifting), and the Ogbanjes or mermaids.
What if all this superstitious sightings, are actually ALIENs?
To top it all I also have a hypothetical believe that some of our historical mythologies might have actually been recorded attributes Aliens.
Imagine if what some scientists and the movie “PROMETHEUS” proposes is true.
What if we humans are creations from an advance set of extraterrestrial beings.
Again I go with the Yoruba mythical theory of evolution that says...
"Before man and lands were created the world was originally a marshy water wasteland, and in the sky above lived many gods of which they sometimes descended from the sky on spider webs to play in the marshy waters.
Obatala descended from the heavens to create land which was later used to created man.
Another version tells of Oduduwa as a semi-god coming down from a chain to create land. The means of arrival of the gods could be related to the way aliens are generally believed to leave their ship through large “Light-Beams”.
We know of their descendant, another demi-god in a different generation “Sango” who possessed the pyrokinesis ability (to breath and control fire).
Ironically this gods share similarities to MARVEL COMICs portrayal of a fictional advance Aliens race living in another galaxy on a planet called Asguard.
I know all this hypothesis of mine is no proof for ETs, so I share the responsibility of answering the question my sister asked me “if ALIENs exist, have they been to Nigeria before?”
