PERSON OF ESSENCE - JULY 2018

Having a chat with an intellectual, amiable and pleasantly handsome young man could be very exciting and that was exactly the case in the interview with the number one COMPSSAite . Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, Agbaje Ayobami!

ME -Medilag Essence

ME: Can we meet you please?
My full name is Agbaje Ahmed  Ayobami, a Lagosian by birth.
I'm final year MBBS student. I'm someone that is passionate about making impact in areas of academics  and politics. I'm a quiet person as opposed to what some other people think (that I talk much). I'm also very shy when I talk with people individually, but I'm bold when addressing a crowd. I'm the third child of four children in my family.

ME: Tell us something most people don't know about you.
I can sacrifice anything for my people.. i prefer to take harm than to allow any harm befall them.

ME:What do you do in your spare time?
I spend it with my friends.

ME: What are your hobbies?
Watching football, reading something about politics, watching movies, spending time with people I care about.

ME: Do you have any side hustles?
Yes. I'm an academician so I give tutorials. I stopped the one in school temporarily, because of my office.

ME: What are the offices you've occupied so far in school?
Assistant Course Rep (200L&300L)
Course Rep (500L)
Head of COMPSSA Academics Committee (2015)
COMPSSA General Secretary (2016)
COMPSSA President (2018)

ME: You ran for Presidency previously and lost. Why did you run again?
There's always a need for change and innovation. The system of COMPSSA is not the best it can possibly be. That's why I've always has the passion, right from 200 level, to give COMPSSA a structure. A structure that will show and live on, even after I've left office. Therefore, even with my loss the first time, I still saw the need for improvement and took advantage of the opportunity to serve by running again.

ME: What is the major thing you want to achieve as the COMPSSA President considering the fact that you have a short period of time left?

I and my exco team are focusing on three main areas; Academics, Health Week and COMPSSA cafeteria. Concerning Academics, we're looking to hold effective tutorials for all levels writing exams (which is already in progress). We're also planning to ensure that the two reading rooms (Cold room and Stella)are working optimally. At the moment, there's a budget and the master plan has been drawn. We're just waiting for a go-ahead and that place will be transformed "magically". Concerning the Health Week,  let's first note that over the last two administrations, there has been no health week. We're working tirelessly to bring it back. The proposed date For this year's Health Week commencement is October 13. I believe in my executives and that we'll achieve a lot of things. We have sponsors and capable COMPSSAites that are ready to go as far as possible to ensure our success. We also have the support of the HOL.

ME: So far, what are the challenges you've faced?
Firstly, it is important to note that leadership and management are two different things. And the first challenge I've encountered is managing people and bringing them together.  You can't achieve much if you can't bring people together and manage them. Sometimes, you drop your leadership ability to be manager and vice versa.
Another challenge I've faced is that of funds. This has made us to put projects in place to source for funds, eg: COMPSSA viewing centre. Also, we're sending out letters to sponsors to source for funds.
The third is the ability to combine school work with my office.

ME:Can we get a peek into the plans that the excos have for COMPSSAites? Apart from the health week and the previously mentioned.
–To ensure that the hostels have sufficient water and electricity.
–Ensuring that the welfare of COMPSSAites are well catered for. Like in the cases of availability of mattresses and DSTV in the female hostels.
–COMPSSAboration
–Medilag's got talent.

ME: Talking about social life and COMPSSA, how was Pool out?
In terms of delivery, we delivered 100%. The challenge we had was the turn up. This was low because of exams and fasting.

ME: Do you have mentors or role models?
Yes! Barrack Obama and Ben Carson are my role models. My mentors are BIB (a notable past president of COMPSSA), Drs. Toyosi, Hassan and Eniola who put me through academically.

ME: As a person, what is the most outstanding moment in your life?
I've had many very outstanding moments. Some of which are:
–When I got admitted to study Medicine.
–When I got a scholarship award.
–When I won my first election for the Office of COMPSSA General Secretary.
–When I became the President of COMPSSA.

ME: What is your most embarrassing moment so far?
I've had two very embarrassing moments and they are:
–When I missed a question that I was supposed to know in front of the whole class and everybody was laughing.
–When a girl I was trying to "trike" walked out on me after showering me with accolades.

ME: Why MBBS?
To me, I feel all medical professional are nice. But from a young age, I had always wanted to be a doctor to get the opportunity to help people and save lives.

ME: If not MBBS, what else?
I'd love to be a lawyer because I like to argue. I also love politics.

ME: Aside from your power as the COMPSSA President, if there was something you could change in Medilag and the CMUL community, what would it be?

I think I'd change the orientation and attitude of students towards the use of public facilities, eg: toilets,  bathrooms, common rooms, etc.

ME: What do you think of the inter-level and inter-departmental relationship in COMPSSA?
I think it's not so great, especially the senior-junior relationship. Something about it is that respect is reciprocal. About the inter-departmental relationship, most people are only known in their department, except the very social and political minds. This is why there is COMPSSA, to unite all. Even in intra-departmental programmes, it is advisable to invite other departments to take part.

ME: How do you balance school work and other extra curricular activities?
I try as much as possible to attend my morning classes and then go for any necessary meetings of engagements afterwards. Therefore, most of my COMPSSA activities are done mid-day, while my classes come in the mornings. However, there is flexibility when the need arises.

ME: What precautions are you taking against following the trend of past COMPSSA Presidents who earned extra years?
First of all, nobody fails anybody. We're all given a fair chance to go into the exam hall and answer questions. Many people who are not COMPSSA excos have failed in this school too. I've actually found out that most of the COMPSSA presidents over the past few years might not have done enough. Going to school is important and it means going to the clinic, as well as classes. Another thing is that priorities have to be understood and reading has to be regular, ie; about two hours a day. Also, try as much as possible to be respectful and not to step on people's toes. You should also know yourself and how to pray, because with God, one can always do better.

ME: So, for the ladies out there that might want to know, is there a COMPSSA First Lady?
No. I'm as single as a baby bird. Ready to mingle. But it's likely to change anytime soon though.

ME: What do you want to be remembered for?
I want to leave a legacy that would make people say:
–It was in his time that COMPSSA regained strength and structure.
–From his time, COMPSSA presidents started passing their exams in one sitting.
–COMPSSA President was known to have a very good attitude towards people.

ME: After MBBS, what next?
I want to do my house job, most likely in LUTH. But if not, I'd love to do it in a military hospital, where "there's money". Honestly, I want to extend my politics outside school so I'm supposed to get a ticket from Lagos State House of Assembly to become a member.

ME: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I'd be done with Medical School and my house job. I'd probably be doing my residency in LUTH and I'llPP also be a member of a political party in Nigeria. Possibly, I would be a senate member or a politician of high office. Actually, I need someone as my support. I need to be in a serious relationship before I leave medical school. Someone I call call to count on, anytime and rely on as a backbone. Someone that would be my own spring of ideas, whenever I need her.

Well, there you have it people! Straight from the horse's mouth  🐴🐴
